SALEM, Va. Blake Schultz of Williams is the 2010 recipient of the Jostens Trophy. The annual awards recognize outstanding student-athletes in NCAA Division III basketball for excellence in the classroom, on the playing court and in the community. Schultz was chosen by a national selection committee that consists of college coaches, former athletes, college administrators and selected members of the media. The members of the national selection committee cast their votes based on three criteria: basketball ability, academic prowess and community service.
NEW LONDON, Conn. Chris OBrien has been named the interim head coach of the mens and womens tennis programs at Connecticut College. OBrien spent the previous six years as the mens and womens tennis coach at Roger Williams University, where he serves as the director of study advocacy. Prior to coaching at Roger Williams, OBrien was the head mens tennis coach at the University of Rochester, his alma mater.
HADLEY, Mass. Middlebury senior forward Charlie Townsend (Pennington, N.J.) has been selected as the NESCAC Player of the Week for March 8, 2010. Townsend broke a 2-2 tie on Sunday during the final of the 2010 NESCAC Mens Ice Hockey Championship by scoring the game-winner with just 1:42 remaining to lift the Panthers to a 3-2 victory over Bowdoin. He also assisted on the games first goal during Saturdays 4-2 win against Trinity.
HADLEY, Mass. Amherst junior forward Courtney Hanlon (Fullerton, Calif.) and Trinity senior goaltender Isabel Iwachiw (New York, N.Y.) shared NESCAC Player of the Week honors for March 8, 2010. Hanlon tallied the championship-clinching goal at 5:57 of overtime on Sunday, propelling the Jeffs to the 2010 NESCAC title over Trinity, 2-1.Iwachiw helped the Bantams reach the final of the NESCAC Womens Ice Hockey Championship for the first time in program history, combining for 93 saves and a .969 save percentage over the weekend.
HADLEY, Mass. Tufts junior guard Colleen Hart (Needham, Mass.) was named NESCAC Player of the Week for March 8, 2010. Hart averaged 27.0 points per game for the Jumbos during a 1-1 showing over the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament. She hit 19-of-37 attempts from the floor (.514), went 11-for-17 from beyond the arc (.647), and made 5-of-6 free throw attempts (.833).
