NCAA Honors Connecticut College for Diversity in Athletics Programs

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The National College Athletic Association (NCAA) has honored the Connecticut College athletics department with the Diversity in Athletics Award in the category of Gender Equity (Title IX Proportionality) for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Connecticut College men and women actively participate in the school’s 28 intercollegiate programs (15 women, 12 men, 1 coed) in numbers that are substantially proportional to the school’s overall enrollment. Connecticut College was one of seven Division III institutions honored in this category for gender equity.
Fran Shields, the Katherine Wenk Christoffers ‘45 Director of Athletics & Chair of the Physical Education Department, proudly accepted the award on behalf of Connecticut College at the 2010 NCAA Convention in Atlanta, Ga.
“We are proud to be a welcoming environment for all men and women, providing numerous opportunities for participation in recreation, sport, and physical education,” Shields said.
The NCAA honored Division III institutions for promoting diversity in five different categories: gender diversity, racial diversity, value and attitudinal diversity, diversity strategy and gender equity.
