HARTFORD, Conn. – Trinity College announced the hiring of Michael Renwick as its fourth director of athletics in the past 75 years on Thursday. Currently the senior associate director of athletics for internal operations and compliance at Johns Hopkins University, Renwick will succeed Richard Hazelton, who announced his retirement in September, effective June 30, after a 36-year career in Trinity athletics.

The College conducted a national search that was co-chaired by Dean of Faculty Rena Fraden and Drew Hyland, Charles A. Dana Professor of Philosophy. Renwick will assume the position of athletic director on July 1.

Renwick has served as senior associate director of athletics at Johns Hopkins since 2006 and as an administrator in the Johns Hopkins athletic department for the past nine years. He is responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the department that includes 22 varsity sports at the Division III level and nationally renowned Division I men’s and women’s lacrosse programs. He has also overseen the club sport program with 26 teams and a robust intramural program. He developed and managed the operational and fundraising departmental budgets, conceptualized and executed new department programs and initiatives with adherence to a 10-year strategic plan, and served as the principal liaison between Johns Hopkins Athletics and all other campus departments. Renwick assisted in the organization of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Final Four in Baltimore in 2007, and served as the 2007-08 chair of the American Lacrosse Conference.

“We are very excited to welcome Mike Renwick to Trinity to lead our athletics program,” said Trinity President James F. Jones, Jr. “Our search committee was impressed with Mike’s administrative experience at Johns Hopkins. Even more compelling, we saw how well he embraced our dual emphasis on academic and athletic excellence. His leadership, his energy, and his character will be very strong influences on the mission and vision of our entire athletic program, and we will look to him with confidence to continue the great tradition of Trinity athletics. We are quite thrilled to welcome Mike to Trinity.”

As athletics director, Renwick will oversee a department comprising 29 varsity sports, a rapidly growing intramural program, and a for-credit physical education curriculum. He will also supervise the management of Trinity’s athletic facilities, including Ferris Athletic Center, Koeppel Community Sports Center, Friends of Trinity Rowing Boathouse, Jessee/Miller Field, and Robin L. Sheppard Field.

Over half of the students on campus participate in sports at Trinity, where athletics play an important role in a well-rounded liberal arts education. Trinity has a long and rich history of athletic success, dating back to the mid-1850s, and has maintained that success in recent years. The Trinity men’s squash team has won 11 consecutive national intercollegiate titles and owns the longest winning streak in the history of intercollegiate varsity sports with over 200 victories in a row, while the baseball, women’s rowing, and women’s squash teams have each won national crowns in the past 10 years.

"I am extremely honored to have the opportunity to work with a team of bright, talented, and committed coaches, administrators, students, and alumni to further Trinity’s success and storied tradition,” Renwick said. “This is a dream come true for me, both personally and professionally. I realize I have some very large shoes to fill, and fully intend to work tirelessly to continue the tradition of excellence Rick Hazelton has instilled at Trinity."

Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Renwick, 36, served in a variety of roles at Ferrum College in Virginia and Rhodes College in Tennessee, including assistant basketball coach, sports information assistant, and recreation coordinator. He holds a B.A. in environmental policy from Rutgers University and a master’s degree in sports and leisure commerce from the University of Memphis. Renwick is also a graduate of the Sports Management Institute.
