Bowdoin Eliminates Wesleyan from Baseball Championship, 14-7

The Bowdoin Polar Bears advanced to the second elimination game of the NESCAC Baseball Championship with a 14-7 win over the Cardinals of Wesleyan in a game that was finished Sunday at Tufts University's Huskins Field. Bowdoin had a 7-2 advantage after three and a half innings on Saturday at Bentley College in Waltham, Mass., when the game was suspended due to heavy downpours.
Wesleyan got on the board with an unearned run in the first inning, but Bowdoin grabbed two in the second and four runs in the third to jump out to a 6-2 advantage.
Junior 3B Brett Gorman (Bedford, N.Y.) was 5 for 5 with five runs scored and three RBI in the game for Bowdoin. Senior 1B Kevin Zikaras (Milford, Conn.) had four RBI as part of a 4 for 5 game, including a bases-clearing double in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 10-5 after Wesleyan had threatened to get back into the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Junior 1B Joe Giamo (Gillete, N.J.) had three hits for the Cardinals, including RBI doubles in the fifth and seventh innings. Sophomore DH Mike Barsotti (Philadelphia, Pa.) had two hits and scored two runs.
Senior Joe Pace (Newburyport, Mass.) pitched a complete game over the two days to earn the victory and improve to 4-2 on the season. Pace allowed four earned runs and struck out four batters while giving up 10 hits and walking five. Starting pitcher Brett Yarusi (Belmar, N.J.) dropped to 7-3 with the loss for Wesleyan.
The teams combined for nine errors in the contest, five of them by Wesleyan which led to eight unearned runs for the Polar Bears.
Bowdoin will be back on the field immediately after to face the Ephs of Williams College in the loser's bracket final. The winner will advance to the championship game to play the Tufts University Jumbos.
