2000 Football Players of the Week
November 12, 2000
Offensive Player of the Week:
Bryan Sanchez, Middlebury
(Senior, RB - Fairfield, Conn.)
Sanchez rushed 38 times for 215 yards and scored three touchdowns.
He scored on runs of 14, 2, and 23 yards. Sanchez finished as the
school's all-time leader in rushing with 2,929 yards.
Todd Themistocles,
Wesleyan
(Senior, WR - Hanover, Mass.)
Themistocles caught 11 passes for 147 yards and three touchdowns.
He caught scoring passes of 25, 16, and 19 yards with the last two
touchdowns coming in the second half to seal the victory for
Wesleyan.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Andy Steele, Middlebury
(Senior, LB - Boise, Idaho)
Steele recorded nine tackles, including three for a loss. He
forced three fumbles, recovered two fumbles, and added one sack as
Middlebury extended its string of not allowing a touchdown to 26
consecutive quarters.
Brian Daoust,
Amherst
(Senior, DB - Dover, Mass.)
Daoust intercepted three passes for 29 yards in returns. He added
six tackles and one pass break-up. His third interception came on
the final Williams drive and secured the victory, the Jeffs' first
over Williams in 13 years.
Rookie of the Week:
Brennan Carney, Wesleyan
(Freshman, QB - South Burlington, Vt.)
Carney completed 17 of 33 passes for 277 yards and five
touchdowns. He threw scoring passes of 10, 25, 32, 16, and 19
yards.

Offensive Player of the Week:
Pat Conley, Colby
(Sophomore, QB - Bath, Maine)
Conley completed 14 of 27 passes for 256 yards and three
touchdowns against Tufts. He also rushed one time for 17 yards,
finishing with 273 yards of total offense.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Andy Steele, Middlebury
(Senior, LB - Boise, Idaho)
Steele recorded 13 tackles and broke up three passes as Middlebury
extended its string of not allowing a touchdown to 22 consecutive
quarters.
Patrick Fahey,
Colby
(Junior, DB - Bannockburn, Ill.)
Fahey finished with 11 tackles, three pass break-ups, and two
interceptions. He intercepted a pass during a fake punt attempt and
returned it 55 yards.
Rookie of the Week:
Jake Moore, Williams
(Freshman, QB - Canfield, Ohio)
Moore debuted in the third quarter and led three scoring drives to
lead Williams to victory. He completed six of nine passes for 113
yards and two touchdowns.

Offensive Player of the Week:
Okey Ugwonali, Amherst
(Junior, RB - Dallas, Texas)
Ugwonali rushed for a season-high 151 yards on 32 carries and
scored the lone touchdown of the game. On the scoring drive, he
rushed nine times for 53 yards, capping the drive on a one-yard
scoring run.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Mike Moran, Colby
(Sophomore, LB - Bedford, N.H.)
Moran recorded 14 tackles, including six solo hits, as Colby shut
out Bates. He finished with three tackles for 22 yards in loss,
including two sacks for 12 yards lost.
Rookie of the Week:
Mike Hackett, Williams
(Freshman, RB - Rutland, Vt.)
Hackett rushed 22 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns for
Williams.
Dave Laferriere,
Wesleyan
(Freshman, DB - Meriden, Conn.)
Laferriere recorded seven tackles, four unassisted, and blocked
two punts. One punt block was recovered in the end zone by a
teammate for a touchdown.

Offensive Player of the Week:
Bryan Sanchez, Middlebury
(Senior, RB - Fairfield, Conn.)
Sanchez rushed 26 times for 214 yards and caught two passes for 30
yards. He scored on touchdown runs of 10 and 73 yards while rushing
for over 100 yards for the fifth time in as many games this season
and the seventh consecutive game, dating back to last season.
Defensive Player of the Week:
David Frankel, Amherst
(Senior, FS - New York, N.Y.)
Frankel finished with a career-high 12 tackles, including three
solo hits. He blocked a punt for a safety, providing the difference
in a 9-7 Amherst win. He also intercepted a pass and broke up three
passes.
James Kingsley,
Williams
(Junior, LB - Madison, Conn.)
Kingsley finished with 11 tackles, including four for 19 yards in
losses. He recorded two sacks, and he recovered a fumble and
returned it 13 yards for a touchdown.
Rookie of the Week:
Mike Hackett, Williams
(Freshman, RB - Rutland, Vt.)
Hackett rushed 31 times for 148 yards and one touchdown. He also
caught two passes for 56 yards and one touchdown.
October 15,
2000
Offensive Player of the Week:
Sean Atkins, Bates
(Sophomore, RB - New York N.Y.)
Atkins carried 21 times for 148 yards and caught two passes for 10
yards. He averaged seven yards per carry and scored on a 53-yard
touchdown run.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Pat McGee, Amherst
(Junior, DL - Marshfield, Mass.)
McGee recorded a game-high 10 tackles and four sacks for 24 yards
in losses. He finished with four solo hits and five overall tackles
for loss, totaling 29 yards as Amherst defeated previously unbeaten
Colby.
Rookie of the Week:
Brennan Carney, Wesleyan
(Freshman, QB - South Burlington, Vt.)
Carney completed 15 of 32 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns.
He threw both scoring passes in a three-minute span in the fourth
quarter as Wesleyan rallied from a 10-0 halftime deficit to edge
Bates 20-17.

Offensive Player of the Week:
Pat Conley, Colby
(Sophomore, QB - Bath, Maine)
Conley completed 21 of 34 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns.
He also rushed five times for 37 yards and one touchdown as Colby
remained undefeated. The 3-0 start is the team's best since
1972.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Andy Steele, Middlebury
(Senior, LB - Boise, Idaho)
Steele led Middlebury to its shutout of previously undefeated
Amherst. He recorded 15 tackles and tied a school-record with four
sacks.
Rookie of the Week:
Matt Cerne, Tufts
(Freshman, WR/KR - Atkinson, N.H.)
Cerne returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown midway through the
fourth quarter to give Tufts a 20-16 lead over Bowdoin. He finished
with 72 yards in punt returns, 85 yards in kick returns, and made
six catches for 83 yards. He caught two passes for 30 yards on the
Jumbos' game-winning drive.
Pat Foley,
Bates
(Freshman, LB - Newburyport, Mass.)
Foley recorded seven tackles, including six solo hits, in place of
senior captain Bob Rosenthal. He intercepted two passes as the
Bates defense held Williams to 121 yards below its per-game
average.

Offensive Player of the Week:
Bryan Sanchez, Middlebury
(Senior, RB - Fairfield, Conn.)
Sanchez rushed 29 times for 213 yards, including a 53-yard
touchdown run. He also caught four passes for 23 yards, finishing
with 236 yards of total offense.
Danny Noyes,
Colby
(Junior, WR - Silver Lake, N.H.)
Noyes caught 10 passes for 142 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown
reception. He rushed six times for 93 yards, including an 80-yard
touchdown run, finishing with 235 yards of total offense.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Steve Woodruff, Wesleyan
(Sophomore, DB - Bridgewater, Mass.)
In his first start at free safety, Woodruff intercepted two passes
and made seven tackles. His second interception thwarted a Hamilton
drive with eight minutes remaining and Wesleyan holding a 13-3
lead. The interception led to a 72-yard touchdown drive to seal the
victory.
Rookie of the Week:
Caleb Hudak, Tufts
(Freshman, DE - White River Junction, Vt.)
Hudak recorded six tackles and two sacks as the Jumbos' defense
limited Bates to 152 yards of total offense.
Jamie Creed,
Trinity
(Freshman, DE - Valley Forge, Pa.)
Creed recorded six tackles and two sacks in the Bantams' loss at
Williams.
September 24,
2000
Offensive Player of the Week:
Sean Atkins, Bates
(Sophomore, RB - New York, N.Y.)
Atkins rushed 25 times for 218 yards and three touchdowns. He
scored on touchdown runs of 3, 66, and 80 yards with the two long
scoring runs coming less than 30 seconds after a Trinity touchdown
to keep Bates in the game. He also made three catches for 91 yards
in his first career start. His 309 all-purpose yards were the
second most in school history.
Greg Ward,
Trinity
(Sophomore, QB - Avon, Conn.)
Ward completed 19 of 28 passes for 381 yards and two touchdowns to
lead Trinity to its victory over Bates. Ward, who nearly broke the
school's single-game record of 400 yards passing in his collegiate
debut, threw touchdown passes of 69 and 31 yards. He also ran for
one touchdown as the Bantams accumulated 552 yards of total
offense.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Steven Cella, Trinity
(Junior, FS - Peabody Mass.)
Cella intercepted three passes and scored on a punt return to lead
Trinity past Colby. He returned six punts for 101 yards, including
a 52-yard touchdown that gave the Bantams a 30-14 lead.
Rookie of the Week:
Matt Cerne, Tufts
(Freshman, WR - Atkinson, N.H.)
Cerne caught four passes for 43 yards and one touchdown. His
touchdown reception, made while he was lying on his back in the end
zone, brought Tufts to within three points, 10-7, of Wesleyan. He
returned two punts for 44 yards and returned one kickoff 15 yards.
