11 NESCAC Players Named NFHCA All-America
HADLEY, Mass. - 11 field hockey players from NESCAC institutions garnered All-America recognition from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) on Monday. Of the 11 individuals selected among the three All-America teams, four student-athletes found a spot on the First Team: Bowdoin seniors Lindsay McNamara and Julia King, Middlebury sophomore Chase Delano, and Tufts junior Margi Scholtes.
McNamara, the NESCAC Player of the Year last fall, was the unanimous choice by the coaches for Offensive Player of the Year this season. McNamara tallied a program-best 32 goals - including 12 game-winners - and three assists for 61 points, as she capped her career with the Polar Bears by scoring the championship-winning goal during the second overtime in the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament final on Sunday. The all-time leading scorer for Bowdoin with 92 career goals, McNamara ranks tied for eighth all-time in NCAA Division III history. She also set the program record for goals in a game with five markers in a victory over Wheaton on Sept. 7. McNamara was also named to the All-Conference First Team for the third consecutive year.
King, Bowdoin's all-time assist leader with 47 helpers and a two-time All-NESCAC honoree, was second for the Polar Bears in scoring with a conference-best 16 assists to go along with six goals for 28 points. King and McNamara finished their Bowdoin careers with an overall record of 74-5, a 21-2 postseason record, four NESCAC Championships and a pair of NCAA crowns (2007, 2008).
Delano, who posted four goals and three assists in 2007, broke the Panthers’ single-season goal record with 27 tallies in 2008. She finished her sophomore campaign with a team-high 61 points.
Scholtes was named NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year along with All-NESCAC First Team recognition after being selected to the Second Team in 2007. Starting all 21 games this autumn, Scholtes was part of a Jumbo defense that ranked fourth in the conference in goals allowed at 21 (1.00 per game). She also contributed three goals and eight assists for 14 points, fifth among her teammates.
Members of the All-America Second Team included Tamara Brown of Tufts, Alyssa Dudzik of Amherst, Christine Mwatarura and Robyn Williams of Trinity, and Taryn Petrelli of Middlebury. Tufts' Amanda Roberts and Bowdoin's Leah Ferenc were selected to the Third Team.
