Three-Goal First Half Gives Tufts 3-0 Win Against Williams in Field Hockey Semifinals

HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior forward Tamara Brown (Annandale, Va.) assisted on the game’s first goal and scored the second moments later to lead second-seeded Tufts to a 3-0 victory over fifth-seeded Williams in the second semifinal of the 2009 NESCAC Field Hockey Championship Saturday afternoon on Trinity College’s Sheppard Field. Tufts advances to its second straight NESCAC finals and will face Trinity, a 2-1 winner over Bowdoin earlier in the day.

The Jumbos improve to 15-1, while Williams’ season ends at 6-10. The winner of tomorrow’s NESCAC Championship game will earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Trinity took the regular season game, 2-1, in overtime at Tufts on October 17. Tufts lost in the 2008 NESCAC Finals to Bowdoin, 1-0.

Tufts received first-half goals from junior forwards Melissa Burke (Walpole, Mass.) and Brown less than two minutes apart and a third from senior forward Taylor Dyer (Windham, N.H.) with 10:32 remaining before the break as the Jumbos dominated play from the opening whistle. The Jumbos totaled 18 shots in the first half against just two for Williams and outshot them, 23-3, for the game.

Tufts sophomore Marianna Zak (Concord, Mass.) needed to make just one save in each half to earn the shutout victory. Junior Katrina Tulla (New Canaan, Conn.) had 10 saves in the Williams cage. Jumbo junior Jess Perkins (Barrington, R.I.) and sophomore Lindsay Griffith (Wilmington, Del.) recorded assists. The win is the fifth in a row for Tufts and its fifth straight over the Ephs.
