Colby Advances to NESCAC Semifinals with 5-1 Victory Over Connecticut College

WATERVILLE, Maine ­ Josh Reber (Edina, Minn.) had two goals and two assists and goalie Ben Grandjean (Waterford, Conn.) earned his 30th career victory as the third-seeded Colby College men's hockey team took a 5-1 win over sixth-seeded Connecticut College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference quarterfinal on Saturday at Alfond Rink.

Colby will stay in Maine for next weekend's NESCAC Final Four. The Mules (14-8-2) will play second-seeded Middlebury College next Saturday at 4 p.m. in a semifinal game at Bowdoin College. The top-seeded Polar Bears will take on No. 5 Amherst College in the other semifinal at 1 p.m. The NESCAC title game is Sunday at 1 p.m. at Bowdoin.

Reber scored the first two goals of the game at 11:07 and 12:49 of the first period to give the Mules a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.

Joe Rothwell (Unionville, Ontario) tallied at 2:20 of the second period on the power play to put the Mules up 3-0, but the Camels (10-13-2) battled back when Brett Moore (Medfield, Mass.) scored at 7:07 on the power play to make it 3-1 after two periods.

Colby captain Greg Osborne (Stoughton, Mass.) scored his 21st goal of the season to give the Mules some breathing room at 2:10 of the third period. Ryan Chrenek (Grande Prairie, Alberta) got the final goal at 13:56 in a short-handed situation.

Colby's Arthur Fritch (South Boston, Mass.) had three assists and has 25 for the season as he leads all Division III defensemen in scoring. Reber, a junior, has 97 career points with 24 goals and 73 assists.

Grandjean made 27 saves in moving his career record at Colby to 30-16-4 in 50 starts. Camel goalie Greg Parker (Trenton, Ontario) had 23 stops.
