MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Jory Kahan, a senior and a three-year starter on defense for the Wesleyan men's soccer team, has been named a second-team CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine College Division Men's Soccer Academic All-American, it was announced today. The Norwich, Vt. native is the first Wesleyan men's soccer player to make a national academic All-America squad and is the 24th Wesleyan athlete overall to be honored through the program.
He is the only player from a NESCAC college named to any of the three national teams in 2009.
Helping to anchor one of the stingiest Division III defenses in the country, Kahan has started each of the Cardinals' 18 games thus far. Wesleyan has posted a 12-1-5 record, will be playing in the NCAA Division III tournament sectional semi-finals Sat., Nov. 21 vs. Rochester in a game at Messiah, and has set school records for both longest unbeaten streak (15 games with an 11-0-4 start) and most shutouts in a season (12 to date). Kahan is a two-time NESCAC all-academic honoree and a team tri-captain in 2009.
Wesleyan has allowed just eight goals through 18 contest for a team goals-against average of 0.42, which ranks fifth nationally in Division III as of Nov. 15.
Kahan has played all but one of a possible 48 games over the last three seasons with 40 starts. As a freshman, Kahan saw action in just two games before moving into a starting role as a sophomore. Kahan also contributes to the offense and has scored three goals along with two assists for eight career points. Each of his three goals has been a game-winner as he netted the deciding goal in a 1-0 win at Conn. College in 2007, in a 3-2 triumph at Bowdoin in 2007 and in a 4-1 victory over Colby this season.
During Kahan's career, Wesleyan has made two trips to the NCAA tournament behind three winning records and has a cumulative mark of 38-17-10 during Kahan's four seasons to date.
In addition to his soccer activity, Kahan is a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Council at Wesleyan; is a manager for the R&B Society which assists in raising funds for the college; and along with fellow men's soccer senior stalwart and First Team All-NESCAC pick Nick Whipple, serves as a play-by-play webcaster for winter sporting events at Wesleyan.
