2002 Men's Tennis All-Conference Team Announced
Lefkowitz of Williams Named Player of the Year
HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior Josh Lefkowitz of Williams was named the 2002 NESCAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Year. Lefkowitz entered the championship at Amherst as the top seed in first singles and dropped only one set in capturing the singles title for the third time in four years. Rifat Perahya of Tufts was named the Rookie of the Year and Dave Schwarz of Middlebury earned Coach of the Year honors. Senior Ben Lamanna of Bates received the Clarence Chaffee Award, given annually to the player who best combined and displayed a high standard of tennis coupled with the highest levels of sportsmanship.
Junior Colin Joyner of Bowdoin was the only player to earn All-NESCAC honors in singles and doubles. He earned all-conference honors in singles by advancing to the semifinals of the "A" singles flight and was the only player to take a set from Lefkowitz. Joyner joined with junior August Felkner to reach the finals of the "A" doubles flight.
The All-NESCAC team was determined from action at the tournament. Each singles player who advanced to the semifinals of the first singles flight or the final of the second singles flight earned all-conference honors. In doubles, the two teams who advanced to the final of the first doubles flight and the winning duo in the second doubles flight garnered All-NESCAC honors.
Junior Alex Wong of Wesleyan, who entered the tournament seeded seventh, reached the final of the "A" singles flight to earn all-conference honors. Sophomore Richard Lawrence of Trinity repeated as an All-NESCAC performer in singles by advancing to the semifinals of the "A" flight. Sophomore David Frankel of Williams and Rifat Perahya of Tufts received all-conference recognition for advancing to the "B" singles flight final. Frankel edged the tournament’s top rookie in three sets.
