Four Singles Players, One Doubles Team Remain Following Day One of NCAA Men's Tennis Individuals

OBERLIN, Ohio – Four singles players and one doubles team representing NESCAC institutions remain following day one at the 2010 NCAA Men's Tennis individual championships at Oberlin.

At least one quarterfinal singles match features a conference showdown, as Bowdoin's Stephen Sullivan will face Amherst's Austin Chafetz. Sullivan won both of his matches today in straight sets, downing Sam Wichlin of Mary Washington 6-3, 6-4, and Issac Stein of Washington (Mo.) 7-6, 6-4. Chafetz was a winner over J.C. Perez-Borja 6-2, 6-4.

Middlebury senior Andrew Lee will meet Dillon Pottish of Emory in tomorrow's quarterfinals. Lee earned a 7-6, 6-1 victory over David Maldow of Johns Hopkins. Fellow Panther Andrew Peters will also face a member of Emory when he takes on Chris Goodwin. Peters downed Nick Ballou of Cal Lutheran, 6-2, 6-4, then ended North Central's Sam Sweeney's run, 6-2, 6-3.

Mark Kahan of Amherst battled Mikey Lim of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to three sets in the first round. Lim took the first set 6-4, but Kahan responded with a 6-2 victory in the second set and then won the third 7-6. Kahan could not get past John Watts of Washington (Mo.), falling 6-3, 6-0.

Williams' Nick Lebedoff suffered a similar fate to Kahan. Lebedoff won his first match over Whitman's Matt Solomon, 6-4, 6-2, but fell to Goodwin in three sets, 4-6, 7-6, 3-6.

Spencer Feldman of Trinity won his first set in the first round, 6-2 over William Zhang from Chicago, but could not keep the momentum as Zhang claimed the final two sets, 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles play, only the top-seeded tandem of Andrew Lee and Andrew Thomson of Middlebury advanced out of the first round. They won in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 over David Ashlock and Andrew Reznik of Texas-Tyler.

Feldman and Anson McCook from the Bantams lost in straight sets to Charles Brody and Michael Greenberg of Kenyon, 6-3, 6-3. Chafetz and his doubles partner, Robert Sorrel, of Amherst also lost in the first round, 6-3, 6-4 to the Mary Washington duo of Evan Goff and Kaz Murata.

Action resumes Saturday morning with singles play at 9:00 a.m. followed by doubles action at 2:00 p.m.
