Amherst Wins First NESCAC Men's Tennis Title Since 1992

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Amherst won its first NESCAC
Men’s Tennis Championship since 1992, with a 5-0 victory over
rival Williams (14-7) at Middlebury College. The title is the
fourth overall for the Jeffs, after winning previous crowns from
’90-’92. Amherst improves to 31-1 and receives an
automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Championship, while the Ephs are
expected to receive an at-large bid.
Amherst came out charging, taking all three doubles matches once again. The #3 doubles contest saw Chris Dale and Mark Kahan come from down 4-3 to top Will Petrie and Kevin Shallcross, 8-4.
Mark Kahan was quick to defeat Matt Micheli 6-2, 6-1 at #2 to give Amherst a quick 4-0 advantage. Austin Chafetz sealed the match for the Jeffs at #3, topping Trey Meyer 6-2, 6-4. Luis Rattenhuber and Joey Fritz were up a set in their matches, while Bryan Chow and Dylan Page of Williams were up a set in their contests when the match was decided.

Semifinal Winners
Format
The top six teams in the conference shall qualify for the
championship. The championship is a single-elimination
tournament with no consolation matches. The No. 1 seed and
No. 2 seed shall receive a first round bye. All matches will
be played to conclusion unless there is inclement weather or other
extenuating circumstances that the tournament committee believes
warrants playing to decision.

Selection
Teams will be selected and seeded based on the following
criteria (not in priority order):
- NESCAC win-loss record
- NESCAC head-to-head with tied team(s)
- Wins/losses against other common NESCAC opponents
- Wins/losses against other common non-conference opponents
- Head-to-head results
- In the event of a tie between more than two teams or a head-to-head result is not available, the following procedure will be used (in priority order):
- NESCAC head-to-head results with tied teams
- Win-loss record against other common NESCAC opponents
- Win-loss record against other common in-region opponents
- Win-loss record against other common out-of-region opponents
- Latest ITA National ranking (in the event teams are not nationally ranked, regional rankings will be used)
There will be separate men's and women's tournament committees consisting of four coaches each. Committee membership will rotate annually based on an alphabetical rotation.
Announcement
The tournament committee will notify schools (and the Conference
office) of the participating teams and seeding for the
tournament. Participating teams and seeding will be posted on
the NESCAC web site after the committee has determined the final
seeding and the appeal period has concluded.
