Trinity's MacDermott Named US Rowing Junior National Team Head Coach

PRINCETON, N.J. – USRowing has hired Kevin MacDermott, men's head coach at Trinity College, as its junior national team men's head coach, the organization announced.
"I am honored to coach the 2011 Junior Men's National Team," said MacDermott. "I aim to continue the great progress made by coaches Steve Hargis, Colin Campbell, Boris Kusturic and Rick Brown. Under their stewardship, the identification, development, high performance and selection camps have reached new levels of success. I will strive to continue this outstanding systematic improvement."
MacDermott served as the men's assistant coach at Trinity from 2006-09 before taking over as head coach in July 2009. Prior to Trinity, MacDermott was senior associate director and head coach at Craftsbury Sculling Center and the men's assistant coach at Wesleyan University from 2002-06. MacDermott's coaching résumé also includes assistant positions at Riverfront Recapture Inc. and Central Connecticut State University. As an athlete, MacDermott was a four-year varsity letter winner at Wesleyan University and received the "Founder's Oar" award for most valuable rower in 2001 and 2002.
"Kevin has certainly demonstrated that, in addition to making boats go fast, he has the organizational skills and ability to manage a total program as they prepare for national championship and international racing, and as a result, is well respected in the collegiate rowing community," said U.S. Junior National Team Development Director Steve Hargis. "He will bring a lot of energy to the program and that will enable the junior men's team to continue to build upon the solid foundation that has been created and ultimately take it the next level."
Men's junior national team training sessions have not yet been announced. The 2011 World Rowing Junior Championships will take place August 4-7 in Eton Dorney, Great Britain.
The MacDermott-coached Trinity men's rowers recorded a perfect 12-0 varsity-eight dual record and placed second to NESCAC rival Williams in both the New England Championships and the ECAC Regatta in the spring of 2010. The squad took both the Combined Overall Points Trophy at the ECAC Regatta and the New England Regatta.
