BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Williams College women's swimming and diving team won their sixth-straight NESCAC Championship on Sunday at Leroy Greason Pool on the campus of Bowdoin College. The Ephs, led by an outstanding meet from senior Lindsay Payne, captured the title with 1878.5 team points. Middlebury College (1583), Amherst College (1353.5), Tufts University (931), Connecticut College (808), Colby College (788.5), Bowdoin College (737.5), Hamilton College (638), Wesleyan University (623), Bates College (467) and Trinity College (404) rounded out the final standings.
Payne won two more crowns to cap her weekend, winning the 100 freestyle in a meet-record 50.98 and anchoring Williams' winning 400-yard freestyle relay team. The host Polar Bears captured their first win of the weekend, as Victoria Tudor won the three-meter diving competition with a total of 445.15 points. The other winners on the day were repeats from previous days, as Middlebury's Sara Cowie won the 1650-yard freestyle in a meet-record 17:13.20, while teammate Marika Ross captured the 200-yard butterfly in 2:03.25. Amherst's Brittany Sasser set a NESCAC record in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:59.92, while Colby's Kelsey Norsworthy won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:20.21.
Williams Extends Lead After Day Two at Women's Swimming & Diving Championship

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Williams College women's swimming team extended its lead as familiar faces returned to the top of the podium at Day Two of the NESCAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Bowdoin College on Saturday. The Ephs (1325 points) extended their advantage over nearest competitors Middlebury (1107) and Amherst (953.50) heading into the final day of competition Sunday.
Williams' Linday Payne, Middlebury's Marika Ross and Amherst's Meaghan Stern and Brittany Sasser all added to their trophy cases, collecting wins for the second straight day. Payne and Ross both set NESCAC records, as Payne collected a win in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.54) and Ross claimed the 100-yard butterfly (55.76). Amherst claimed three wins on the day, as Stern won the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.73), Sasser took the 100-yard backstroke (56.56) and both contributed to the Jeff's 800-yard freestyle relay victory (7:39.05). Williams also had three wins as Payne, Amanda Nicholson (400-yard IM, 4:27.81) and the 200-yard medley relay team were victorious.
Middlebury also received a victory from Sara Cowie in the grueling 1000-yard freestyle (10:22.37).

Williams Holds Lead After Day One at Women's Swimming & Diving Championship

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Defending champion Williams College took a commanding first-day lead at the 2006 NESCAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday. The Ephs received a strong showing from senior Lindsay Payne, who picked up a victory in the 50 freestyle and led her squad to a pair of relay wins. Williams (691 points) will enter day two with a lead over nearest competitors Middlebury (554.50) and Amherst (447.50).
Payne set a NESCAC Championship record in the 50 freestyle event, posting a time of 23.40 in the final. The time broke the mark set by Connecticut College's Kate Kovenock in the 2005 championship. Payne also anchored the winning 200 freestyle relay team and went third in the victorious 400 medley relay, setting a new pool record in the process.
Colby, Amherst and Middlebury all had multiple winners on Friday, with the Mules getting wins from Kel Norsworthy in the 50-yard breaststoke (29.15) and Kelsey Potdevin in the 50-yard backstroke (27.82). Middlebury's Marika Ross captured the 50-yard butterfly event (25.87), while Alanna Hanson won the one-meter dive for the Panthers (419.10) in a close competition with Bowdoin's Victoria Tudor (417.90) as the pair both eclipsed the Greason Pool record. Amherst received a pair of wins as well from Meghan Stern in the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.22) and Brittany Sasser in the 200-yard IM (2:05.93).
