Amherst Men Place 10th, Williams Women Sixth at NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships
BEREA, Ohio – The 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships came to a close on Saturday at Baldwin-Wallace College. The Amherst College men's team was the top finisher among NESCAC programs, finishing in a three-way tie for 10th with 18.0 points, while the Williams College women led the conference squads at the event with 33.0 points and a sixth place showing.
North Central College took the men's overall title with a 53.0-point showing, followed by Salisbury in second (36.0). Following the Lord Jeffs' 10th place performance from the NESCAC were Williams (21st, 13.0), Tufts (T-47th, 6.0), Bates (T-62nd, 4.0), and Middlebury (T-80th, 1.0).
In the women's championship, Illinois-Wesleyan edged Wis.-Oshkosh for the team title by one point, scoring 54.0 points overall. Tufts followed the Ephs among conference squads with a 20th place showing (13.5). Bates tied for 39th overall (6.0), while Colby and Wesleyan tied for 67th (1.0) with eight other teams.
The men's 1,500-meter run featured a tight race for the title. Amherst junior Will Yochum came in third, just over three-tenths of a second behind the winner with a time of 3:50.78. Fellow Jeff Steve Corsello was fourth in 3:51.39, while Williams junior Brian Cole was sixth in 3:52.49.
Williams senior Connor Kamm won the 5,000-meter run in a time of 14:28.06, over a full second ahead of the next closest competitor. Tufts senior Jesse Faller was 12th in a time of 15:03.92.
In the women's high jump, Williams first year Julie Paschal was the top finisher among NESCAC individuals, coming in fourth with a mark of 1.70 meters. Tufts sophomore Dayorsha Collins was right behind in fifth at 1.67 meters, while Colby junior Danielle Sheppard was 11th overall at 1.62 meters.
Jumbo rookie Kelly Allen placed fourth in the women's discus, recording a throw of 43.59 meters. Fellow first year Tanasia Hoffler of Williams won the triple jump with a stadium record performance of 12.46 meters. Tufts sophomore Nakeisha Jones was third in 12.07 meters.
Colby junior Emma Linhard was eighth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:31.43. Amherst sophomore Melissa Sullivan placed 12th (4:38.49). Williams junior Lizzy Danhakl was third in the 800-meter event, finishing in 2:10.68.
Williams senior Elise Johnson was the runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles event, as her time of 14.06 was just over two-tenths of a second behind the winning time.
Wesleyan senior Ravenna Neville wrapped up her career on Saturday in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:18.59. Her performance garnered eighth overall.
The Ephs' 4x400-meter relay team came in seventh with a time of 3:49.23.
