2004-05 Women's Basketball Players of the Week

February 28, 2005
Justine Pouravelis, Bowdoin
(Junior, Forward - Old Orchard Beach, Maine)
Bowdoin’s Justine Pouravelis was nearly unstoppable as the Bowdoin College women’s basketball team won their fifth straight NESCAC Championship. Pouravelis dominated the competition, connecting on 17 of 19 shots from the field, scoring a career-high 21 against Amherst in the semifinals and 16 points against Bates in the championship tilt. The reigning NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year also grabbed 20 rebounds in the two games and posted three blocks and three steals against the Bobcats in the Championship Game.

Krissy Morin, Amherst
(Junior, Guard - Litchfield, N.H.)
Krissy Morin netted a pair of free throws with 8.8 seconds remaining to give fifth-seeded Amherst its second-ever NESCAC Championship Tournament victory, a 55-53 win at fourth-seeded Wesleyan, on Saturday. The junior co-captain poured in a game-high 15 points shooting 6-of-9 from the field.

Allison Love, Tufts
(Senior, Forward - Duxbury, Mass.)
Tufts built some momentum heading into the conference tournament with a 3-0 week, and Allison Love's 20.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game led the way. The senior forward scored 20 points with 10 rebounds while connecting on 10-of-15 shots from the floor in a win at Trinity. Love contributed 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting a day later in a seven point win at Amherst.

Olivia Zurek, Bates
(Senior, Forward - Arlington, Mass.)
Olivia Zurek averaged 17 points and 16.5 rebounds last week in Bates wins over Bowdoin, 74-62, and Tufts, 76-66. Against top-ranked Bowdoin, Zurek scored 17 points and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds. She also had four assists, three blocks and a steal in 34 minutes. Logging 38 minutes against Tufts, Zurek scored 17 and pulled down 15 boards with three assists.

Eileen Flaherty, Bowdoin
(Sophomore, Forward - Fairfield, Conn.)
Bowdoin's Eileen Flaherty continued her dominant play of late, averaging 23 points, six boards and two blocks per game in a pair of Polar Bear wins last week. She scored 19 points and grabbed eight boards as Bowdoin snuck past Amherst, 65-62 and then scored a game-high 27 in a victory over Trinity. For the week, she connected on 18 of 32 shots (56%).

Eileen Flaherty, Bowdoin
(Sophomore, Forward - Fairfield, Conn.)
Last year’s NESCAC Rookie of the Year led top-ranked Bowdoin to a pair of key road wins last week at Ithaca and Colby, averaging 25.5 points and 7.5 rebounds. Flaherty connected on 9 of 13 shots and grabbed eight boards in the Polar Bears' win at Ithaca before carrying the Bowdoin offense with 32 points (out of the team's 56 total) in a victory at Colby, shooting 10-13 from the field.

Marisa Berne, Bowdoin
(First Year, Guard - Falmouth, Maine)
Bowdoin rookie Marisa Berne led the Polar Bears to two NESCAC wins by averaging 13.0 points in two victories against regionally-ranked teams. She went 5-7 from three-point range and scored a game-high 17 points as the second-ranked Polar Bears dealt ninth-ranked Bates their first loss of the season. For the weekend, Berne was 8-11 from three-point range as Bowdoin extended their home winning streak to 49 games.

Meghan O’Malley, Williams
(Sophomore, Forward - Topsfield, Mass.)
In leading Williams to a 3-0 week, Meghan O’Malley averaged 14 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 2 assists. In the conference wins over Wesleyan and Connecticut College, she had a double double in each game. O’Malley had 15 points and 14 rebounds as the Ephs handed Wesleyan their first loss. The sophomore scored 17 points with 12 rebounds against Connecticut College.

Olivia Zurek, Bates
(Senior, Forward - Arlington, Mass.)
Zurek led the Bobcats to a 3-0 week with wins over Clark and Williams in the Williams Winter Classic, and Colby. An all-tournament selection at Williams, Zurek averaged 15.7 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.3 steals per game over the three-game stretch. She scored a game-high 22 points with nine rebounds in the championship game at Williams.

Ashley Mastrangelo, Wesleyan
(Junior, Forward - Marblehead, Mass.)
Mastrangelo averaged 19.5 points and 9 rebounds during a 2-0 week. Mastrangelo had 23 points and 8 boards against Emmanuel and followed with 16 points, 10 rebounds and six steals in a win over Rhode Island College.

Hannah Stubbs, Wesleyan
(Junior, Forward - Arlington, Va.)
Hannah Stubbs shot 70% from the field while averaging 17 points and 10 rebounds as the junior forward helped Wesleyan extend its win streak to seven games. Stubbs had a double-double at Coast Guard (13 points, 12 rebounds) and scored the team's last two deciding points at the free throw line in the final 1:30 as the Cardinals edged Coast Guard 66-64. Stubbs scored 17 of her game-high 21 points in the second half against Springfield to secure the victory.

Zurek helped lead Bates to a 3-0 week and was named the Most Valuable Player of the St. Joseph's Classic. The senior forward had a double-double in all three games, averaging 18 points and 12.7 rebounds per game. She shot 52.4 percent from the floor, including a 10-for-14 performance in an 85-70 win over Husson.

Mollie Gage, Connecticut College
(Senior, Forward - New York, N.Y.)
Connecticut College senior tri-captain Mollie Gage netted a game-high 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Camels in a 70-52 victory over Rhode Island College Saturday. Gage shot 64% from the floor (9-for-14).

Sarah Cox, Trinity
(Sophomore, Forward - Norwell, Mass.)
Cox averaged 18.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, 4.0 steals, and 4.0 assists in two games at the Holiday Inn Invitational at Rowan. She made 13 out of 21 shots from the field for the weekend and was named to the All-Tournament Team. She had team-highs of 21 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals in a loss to nationally-ranked Rowan in the tourney finals, and 16 points, four assists, and team-highs of five steals and 14 boards in an 83-58 win over Eastern the day before.
