NEW LONDON, Conn. - Connecticut College women’s basketball coach Laura Hungerford is stepping down after eight seasons with the program.

Hungerford will relinquish her duties as basketball coach effective July 1. She will remain on staff as an instructor and administrator in the physical education department for the 2009-2010 year.

Fran Shields, the Katherine Wenk Christoffers ’45 Director of Athletics and Chair of the Physical Education Department at Connecticut College, commended Hungerford for her contributions to the athletic program.

“We want to thank Laura for her dedication and commitment to our student-athletes,” Shields said. “We look forward to working with Laura as her career takes a new direction.”

Shields will conduct a national search for a replacement head coach.

Hungerford’s leadership has extended far beyond the court. She is well known for her work with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) to promote breast cancer awareness on campus and in the New London area.

In the classroom, Hungerford’s players have performed at the highest level. The program finished 19th in the nation on the WBCA Division III Academic Honor Roll this past summer and consistently ranked as one of the top academic performing teams in the athletic program.
