NEW LONDON, Conn. – Connecticut College women's ice hockey player Brigid O'Gorman has been selected as one of eight finalists for the Hockey Humanitarian Award. The award, presented by BNY Mellon Wealth Management, is given annually to college hockey’s finest citizen and seeks to recognize college hockey players, Division I or Division III, male or female, who give back to their community in the true humanitarian spirit. It is the second year in a row that O'Gorman has been chosen as a finalist for the award.
For O'Gorman, a senior captain from Eden, N.Y., and repeat finalist, the world is her community. In the summer of 2010, she traveled to Uganda on a humanitarian mission for which she raised over $10,000. The funds went toward creating a solar powered medical records system. She also delivered children's clothes, books and school supplies (YouTube Video).
O'Gorman also traveled to Uganda during her spring break in 2009. She has also given her time to organizations such as the High Hopes Therapeutic Riding Center, along with Special Olympics Speed Skating of Southeastern Connecticut.
O'Gorman majors in cellular and molecular biology/pre-med at Connecticut College with a dedication to the game of ice hockey that is considered unparalleled by her head coach, Kristin Steele.
At 11-9-2 overall and 7-6-1 in NESCAC play, the Camels have set the program mark for overall wins this season in their 14th year as a varsity program.
