2002 NESCAC Women's Soccer All-Conference Teams Announced
Connecticut College Sophomore Thoeresz Named Player of the Year
HARTFORD, Conn. - Sophomore midfielder Christa Thoeresz of Connecticut College was named the 2002 NESCAC Player of the Year by the conference coaches. A year after being named Rookie of the Year in 2001, Thoeresz led the Camels to the semifinals of the NESCAC Championship and a 10-5-1 overall mark, a five win improvement over 2001.
Four members of the conference champion Tufts University were named to the all-conference first team. Senior Cara Glassanos and junior Jess Lovitz anchored a Jumbo defense that allowed just twelve goals in 16 contests this season. Sophomore forward Jen Baldwin and junior forward Jess Trombly were also honored as first-team selections. Baldwin led Tufts with 8 goals on the year. Trombly was an all-NESCAC second team selection as a freshman.
Conference leading scorer Meg Bonney of Middlebury was selected to the all-conference first team for the fourth consecutive season. Bonney, the 1999 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, led the conference in goals (16) and points (32) this season. The senior forward also led the conference in scoring in 2000 when she was honored as the conference Player of the Year.
Williams senior Stacey Starner received first-team all-NESCAC honors for the third consecutive year. Starner is the all-time leading scorer at Williams finishing her career with 101 points. Starner’s younger sister and Williams’ goalkeeper, Lindsay, was a second-team selection.
Bates senior Krissie Whiting earned first-team honors for the second time. Whiting had five goals and four assists from her midfield position. Sophomores Kendall Cox of Bowdoin and Hannah Stauffer of Williams also garnered first-team honors. Senior goalkeeper Brooke Diamond of Amherst rounds out the all-NESCAC first team. Diamond, a regional all-American in 2001, ended the year with a 1.06 goals against average and .831 save percentage.
Williams freshman defender Elise Henson was honored as 2002 NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Henson was part of a defense which allowed just five goals in nine conference games and only 11 goals on the year.
Tufts Coach Martha Whiting was named NESCAC Coach of the Year by her peers after leading the Jumbos to a NESCAC Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship.
