WATERVILLE, Maine - Doanh Wang, who coached at the NCAA Division I and III levels during the 2006-07 academic year, has been named the head coach of the Colby College men's and women's tennis teams. Wang will start at Colby on July 16 and coach his first matches with the two teams in September during the fall tennis season.
"I was impressed with the whole Colby atmosphere (during my interview)," Wang said. "The coaches who were part of the committee gave such good answers to my questions. They seemed to have a strong identity with the College."
Wang was an assistant coach for women's tennis at the University of Wisconsin since January. The Binghamton, N.Y., native was the head women's tennis coach at Edgewood College for three years. Edgewood and University of Wisconsin are both located in Madison.
Wang coached four Edgewood players to conference singles championships and also had four doubles champions in three years. He had a 15-5 record in league play and was named the Lake Michigan Conference Coach of the Year in 2005 and received the same honor in 2006 by the Northern Athletics Conference. Edgewood did not have a men's tennis program.
"I started getting interested in coaching during grad school. I knew I wanted to do something in education," Wang said.
"Tennis has been such a constant and a passion in my life. I just feel really fortunate to do what I really love."
Besides his coaching experience, Wang also was the Director of Tennis for the village of Shorewood Hills in Wisconsin for the past three years. He also was a tennis instructor at Nielsen Tennis Stadium at the University of Wisconsin from 2002 to 2007.
Wang played collegiate tennis at Binghamton University from 1991 to 1995 and helped the team earn their first-ever trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament during his senior year. The squad finished the season ranked 10th nationally.
Wang earned a bachelor's degree from Binghamton in 1995 and added a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1999.
The Colby men's tennis team returns all but one player from a squad that made the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) playoffs. The women's team lost seniors Allison Dunn and Tracy Nale to graduation and will have a young team
