Tufts Earns 3-0 Decision Against Connecticut College in Volleyball Quarterfinals

AMHERST, Mass. – Fourth-seeded Tufts University earned a 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-18) win over Connecticut College Friday evening in Amherst College’s LeFrak Gymnasium to advance to the semifinal round of the NESCAC Volleyball Championship. The Jumbos improve to 21-9 (7-3 NESCAC) and will take on the host Lord Jeffs tomorrow at 1 p.m., while the Camels end their season at 19-7 (7-3).

Friday marked the Jumbos' second 3-0 win over Connecticut College this season, having defeated the Camels on Oct. 1 in neutral territory. Tufts increased its overall winning streak to four matches, while the Camels had their six-match streak put to rest. The Jumbos will be making their fourth consecutive appearance in the championship semifinals.

The Tufts offense was paced by 38 assists from Kendall Lord '13 and a match-high 14 kills from Caitlin Updike '11. Cara Spieler '12 totaled nine kills and nine digs, Audrey Kuan '12 chipped in with 14 digs, Lexi Nicholas '12 had eight kills, and Kiersten Ellefsen '13 had three total blocks. Nancy Shrodes '11 made only one receiving error in 22 attempts.

Connecticut College struggled with only 26 kills in the match, as Amy Newman '12 had 12 and Sarah Shankel '14 added five. Libero Ally Terlizzi '12 chipped in with five digs, while setter Marissa DeMais '11 totaled 24 assists and 11 digs.
