2010 Volleyball Players of the Week

Megan Jarchow, Middlebury
(First Year, MH - Cos Cob, Conn.)
Jarchow played a big part in helping the Panthers win the 2010 NESCAC Volleyball Championship over the weekend, their first conference crown since 1998. Jarchow led her squad with 4.0 kills per set while hitting at a .349 rate. She also had 4.8 digs and 0.2 blocks per set. In Sunday’s 3-1 final victory over Tufts, Jarchow had 17 kills and 28 digs.

Jane Handel, Middlebury
(Junior, OH - Evanston, Ill.)
Handel led the Panthers to a pair of victories and their highest finish ever in the NESCAC standings as she averaged 3.29 kills and 5.14 digs per set while hitting at a .358 clip. She also contributed five aces and three blocks. During Saturday’s 3-1 win over Williams, Handel had 12 kills and a team-high 24 digs. The night before against Hamilton, Handel recorded 11 kills, 12 digs, and four aces.

Kristin Hanczor, Bowdoin
(Junior, MB - Redding, Conn.)
Hanczor received All-Tournament Team honors at the Hall of Fame Invitational this past weekend, leading the Polar Bears to a second place finish in the Gold Bracket. Hanczor connected on .339 percent of her attacks, averaging 2.33 kills and 1.08 blocks per set. She had 13 kills in victories over both Springfield and Amherst.
   

Lauren Barrett, Middlebury
(Senior, Setter - Medfield, Mass.)
Barrett earned Tournament MVP honors at the Hall of Fame Invitational over the weekend, as the Panthers went 3-0 to win the Gold Bracket. In a 4-0 overall week, Barrett averaged 10.6 assists, 2.23 digs, 0.38 aces and 0.31 blocks per set.

Rachel Yorke, Amherst
(Senior, Libero - Los Angeles, Calif.)
Yorke averaged 7.43 digs per set and had a receiving percentage of .915 over 71 total attempts as the Lord Jeffs went 4-0 last week and vaulted into first place in the NESCAC standings. She recorded 31 digs in a 3-1 victory over Trinity and 35 in a similar win over Connecticut College, committing no errors on 12 attempts against the Camels. Amherst has now won its last 14 matches.

Callie Neilson, Amherst
(Sophomore, Setter - Escondido, Calif.)
Neilson averaged 12.0 assists per set to lead the Lord Jeffs to a 3-0 week on the road, including a 2-0 showing in NESCAC play. In a 3-1, come-from-behind win over Tufts on Friday, Neilson had 46 assists. She followed with 40 more in a 3-0 victory over Bowdoin on Saturday.
   

Sarah Blagden, Trinity
(Junior, Libero - Charleston, S.C.)
Blagden averaged 7.0 digs per set during a 1-1 week for the Bantams. On Friday in a 3-0 victory at Wesleyan, Blagden had 26 digs. She added 30 more digs on Sunday in a 3-2 loss to Connecticut College. On the weekend, Blagden had two reception errors on 51 attempts and four aces.

Emily Avis, Williams
(Senior, Setter - Palo Alto, Calif.)
Avis averaged 10.88 assists per set during a 4-1 week for the Ephs, which included a 3-1 showing at the Stevens Invitational this past weekend. At Stevens, Avis dished out 143 assists over 13 sets (11.0 per set), including 54 in a 3-1 victory over Clarkson on Saturday, and earned All-Tournament Team honors. She also had 33 digs (1.94 per set), nine kills, and three service aces during the week.

Caitlin Updike, Tufts
(Senior, Outside Hitter - Manhattan Beach, Calif.)
Updike was named MVP of the MIT Invitational, which the Jumbos won for the third consecutive year with four victories over the weekend. In a 5-0 overall week, which pushed Tufts’ winning streak to 10 matches, Updike averaged 4.60 kills and 2.80 digs per set with a .331 hitting percentage. She also led the Jumbos with 10 service aces. Updike had 19 kills and 12 digs in a 3-0 win over Brandeis on Tuesday, and posted 14 kills in a 3-0 decision against Williams on Saturday.

Jane Handel, Middlebury
(Junior, Outside Hitter - Evanston, Ill.)
Handel helped the Panthers achieve three victories last week, including a 3-0 win over Amherst to open the NESCAC slate, as she averaged 3.67 kills, 5.00 digs, and 0.56 blocks per set with a .271 hitting percentage. In the decision over Amherst on Friday, Handel recorded 14 kills and 17 digs while hitting at a .400 clip.

Amy Newman, Connecticut College
(Junior, Outside Hitter - Los Angeles, Calif.)
Newman claimed Tournament MVP honors at the Johnson & Wales Invitational over the weekend, leading her Camels to a 4-0 record. Newman averaged 5.58 kills and 2.58 digs per set and posted a .365 hitting percentage over 12 sets. On Friday against Keene St., Newman had 28 kills and 12 digs. Saturday morning, Newman recorded 16 kills and 11 digs against Johnson & Wales.
   

Jane Handel, Middlebury
(Senior, Outside Hitter - Evanston, Ill.)
Handel earned All-Tournament Team honors at the Endicott Tournament over the weekend as she helped her Panther squad go 3-1. Handel averaged 3.0 kills and 4.5 digs per set with a hitting percentage of .246. In a 3-2 setback to host Endicott, Handel had 15 kills, 26 digs, and three blocks. She posted 11 kills, 23 digs, and four aces in a 3-0 victory over Bowdoin.
